7 tips on what to wear to your family photoshoot
You’ve booked your session, now it’s time to figure out what to wear. It can be tricky to coordinate everyone’s outfits, but it’s well worth the effort. Here are some tips to help you with your session.
complement colours:
Coordinate , but not match match: agone are the days where you all wear the same thing. Choose a colour palette or 2-3 colours that complement each other. Think earthy tones, neutrals, and pastels. You can add in multiple shades of one colour. Simple is best.
dress for the location and season
Make sure you select pieces that can easily be layered or taken off. That includes shoes; sandals or bare feet are suitable for the beach, while sneakers would look great in the bush or parks.
avoid busy patterns:
Avoid busy patterns: Large, bold and busy patterns or logos can be distracting and take the focus away from your family. Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns instead that won’t overpower the image. Less is more.
texture:
Adding a knitted cardigan or jumper; have one of your girls wear a tulle skirt or you wear a lace dress can add interest to your photos.
skirts and dresses:
For the gals and girls; wearing long flowy dresses or skirts add movement and shape as it catches the wind and moves with you. Accessories like a hat or headband are also great additions to your outfits but keep it simple.
dress comfortably
Choose practical and comfortable items that your family can easily move around in. Ladies, beware of the neckline of your dress/ tops; you want to be able to move freely without having to worry about “the ladies” popping out unexpectedly.
plan ahead
Plan ahead and try on outfits. Lay out the outfits beforehand and see how they look together. Take test shots to get a sense of how the colours and styles work together. If you’re stuck, your photographer is a great sounding board and should be able to help you decide what would work best.
Have fun! When you feel good, you look good and that confidence will show in your photos.
